Matchplay 1 – 5 Quedgeley Res Scorer 50’, BANNER 46’, HANKINS 48’, RIGBY 85’, BULL 87’, PARK 90’,

Quedgeley made hard work of beating bottom of the league Matchplay away from home.

Quedgeley started the game with a good tempo and passing the ball very well, but having the lion’s share of possession did not help as Wanderers failed to create any real chances. Up to the final 3rd Quedgeley found it comfortable but struggled to beat Matchplay’s back four, as every cross was cleared or shot saved. James Lawes had the key note of the first half bringing out a good save from the home team’s goalkeeper with a shot from the edge of the box.

However it took not long over a minute for Quedgeley to get the breakthrough in the second half, Wanderers finally got in behind the Matchplay defence and after a goalmouth scramble the ball fell to Scott Banner who tucked home from a tight angle. Quedgeley doubled their lead with their next attack; another ball in the box was headed down by Ethan King for Dean Hankins to score his 10th goal of the season.

Quedgeley looked comfortable as Matchplay had hardly threatened, but they did pull a goal back minutes later. Quedgeley lost the ball in the middle of the park and Matchplay gave Quedgeley a polite reminder they were still in the game.

After this the game was end to end as neither side were happy to sit back. Both teams created chances but both goalkeepers were having good games. Scott Moroney saved a one on one late in the second half to stop the score being level. And as Matchplay pushed on, Quedgeley caught them out late with a flurry of goals. Chris Rigby sealed the game in the 85th Minute, rounding the goalkeeper from Will Park’s pass. Pete Bull grabbed the fourth 2 minutes later following a great through ball from Scott Banner. And Will Park gave Quedgeley an undeserved fifth in the final minute, the pick of the bunch as he curled an effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Overall it was a steady performance, but this game could of turned out different if things did not go Quedgeleys way.
